Navigation 101

One: don't assume because you have been there before you know it all.
Two: remember to take your map of the train and underground lines
Three: if you don't have a map first get one before heading off down to the underground
Four: having got lost don't take the advice of the information centre as they will find the longest route to get you there
Five: trust your instincts and work it out from the map
Six: don't do all this on the hottest spring day
Today I visited Helge Bode at the Buchmann Institute for Molecular Life Sciences on the University campus of Riedberg on the outskirts of Frankfurt but it was a bit of a mission getting there: S5 to Oberursel, U3 to Niederursel and finally U8 to Riedberg. But all worth it as what followed was a stimulating discussion for close to 4 hours on the biology and chemistry of natural products. I am now intrigued how DANS (differential analysis of 2D NMR spectra) will help us identify a novel metabolite from a gene cluster we are studying. Plus this discussion will help sharpen up the Marsden grant I am writing.
