We are currently on the Island of Usedom on the Baltic Sea for the Kahmann lab retreat. I was dreading the 10 h bus ride from Marburg to Usedom but the bus was very comfortable and we had lots of stops so the time passed quickly. The retreat is being held at Regine & friends restored farmhouse in the tiny village of Gneventhin. My first impression of Usedom were the brilliant displays of red poppies and blue cornflowers on the edge of the barley and wheat fields. Regine and her friends have a beautiful house, with restored stables with a lookout to view the sea in the distance, and a barn, which was the venue for the talks today. Very novel to have presentations in the loft of a barn. Great talks and lots of questions today. This afternoon we went for a cruise on the inlet where we saw a rare eagle soaring above us. Then to Ahlbeck where a hardy few braved the sea for a swim followed by dinner. Hard to believe we were just 3 km from the border with Poland. The sun is up around 4.30 am and not setting until around 9.30 so the days are now very long.
